Huts may be used only by those who have paid the rental fee, and only on the days specified on the receipt. You must have your receipt-permit with you during your stay.

Huts may not be used for commercial activities.

Alaska State Parks may close huts due to weather, maintenance problems, break-up, or other reasons.

Call the State Parks office for hut and road condition updates.

Tire chains or 4-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended. The road into the recreation area is steep in spots. Tire chains or 4-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended. The road into the landing area and onto the lake might not be plowed at all times. BE PREPARED.

There is a public use cabin which is also available for rent. Contact Alaska State Parks for information.

Birch Lake State Recreation site is a popular destination for ice fishing in the interior. The Alaska Departmenty of Fish and Game stock the lake. From mid December through the end of March. Alaska State Parks rents 5 ice huts. They are located straight out from the boat launch and along the right hand side of the lake.
The lake is popular with fishers, jet-skiers, and water skiers in the summer, and with snowmachiners and ice fishers in the winter. There is excellent fishing all year for stocked species: rainbow trout, king and silver salmon, grayling, and arctic char. Fishing during the open water months is best from a boat. Birch Lake has a developed bathroom, parking facilities, and a public use cabin.
Users should bring their own firewood, especially in winter for use in the cabin, since there is not much left to scavenge in the surrounding forest. The road to the lake (ice fishing huts) and the cabin is not plowed in the winter, so a 4-wheel-drive is advisable. It is only a couple hundred feet from the plowed access road to the lake and cabin.
The turnoff to Birch Lake is located at Mile 305.3 Richardson Highway, aproximately 60 miles southeast of Fairbanks. Follow the access road .3 miles to Birch Lake State Recreation Site. The ice huts start 500 feet out and continue for a 1/4 mile along the right hand shoreline.
