Millinocket, Maine

For outdoor enthusiasts wanting an adventurous getaway, look no further than the town of Millinocket in northeast Maine. Millinocket is the gateway to the sprawling Baxter State Park, where visitors can explore miles of forests, rivers, streams, and mountains—including summit trails for Maine’s highest mountain, Mount Katahdin. Millinocket’s proximity to the picturesque West Branch Penobscot River also gives visitors the chance to experience whitewater rafting and fly or spin fishing.

The Finger Lakes, New York

Door County, Wisconsin

Christened the “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” Wisconsin’s Door County has all the makings for a perfect Labor Day retreat. Krause Springs, Texas

This privately owned 11-acre property is listed on the National Registry of Historical Sites and includes 32 springs that feed both a manmade and a natural pool with fresh water year-round. Visitors can also stroll through the Butterfly Garden on the property or fish in the nearby Little Cypress Creek that drains into Lake Travis.

Coconino National Forest, Arizona

Just south of Flagstaff, Coconino National Forest is a wonderland of red rocks, ponderosa pines, and rolling mountains. With elevations ranging from 2,600 to over 12,000 feet, this region offers cooler Labor Day temperatures in Arizona, with plenty of lakes and trails to take in the diverse geological landscapes. Slide Rock State Park is also in the area, where visitors can cool off in the natural swimming holes and play on the slick sandstone water slide formed on the bed of Sedona’s Oak Creek.
