Itโs no secret, Florida is a great destination to camp during the winter season as the temperatures are mild compared to the northern states. Which is why Florida Forest Service campgrounds are a great option when planning your next outdoor adventure. Check out these great locations that are less crowded and offer a variety of amenities.
Cypress Glen Campground at Withlacoochee State Forest
If you like to camp near lakes, then Cypress Glen Campground is sure to please. This 34-site campground is located in the Silver Lake Recreation Area just 45 minutes from Tampa and has a boat ramp for fishing enthusiasts. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring with grate or grill and bathhouse. There is wildlife hiking and equestrian trails, as well as 2,600 acres of off-road trails for motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle (ATVs) offering endless ways to explore and enjoy the beautiful Withlacoochee State Forest.
Cary State Forest Campground
Get away from the crowds at Cary State Forest near Jacksonville. The campground is set in mature flatwoods, sandhill, and basin marsh with recreation facilities such as the S. Bryan Jennings Pavilion (available to rent) and designated trails offering opportunities to enjoy the wildlife. You might get lucky to see a white-tailed deer, wild turkey, great horned and barred owls, or other local critters. Enjoy your overnight stay at one of the improved primitive and recreational vehicle campsites with restroom and shower facilities near each campsite.
Pine Log Primitive Campsites
Sand Pond Campground is just 14 miles north of Panama City Beach and a great place for a photography expedition, go birding, enjoy a picnic or take your dog on a hike on a portion of the Florida National Scenic Trail and Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail! Enjoy peace and quiet on trails designated for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Make a reservation and stay the night with plenty of campgrounds and day-use areas available.
Horseshoe Equestrian Group Camp
If you and your friends like to ride horses, then Horseshoe Equestrian Group Camp right outside of Naples is the perfect spot to set up camp. Horse stalls and plenty of riding trails are available to explore the Picayune Strand State Forest. There is no potable water or electric facilities available, but there is non-potable water available at the horse stalls. There are also fire rings, picnic tables and a portable restroom.
Fort Braden Primitive Campsites
Looking for a unique experience? Check out Fort Braden Primitive Campsites are in Lake Talquin State Forest right outside of Tallahassee. These tent only primitive campsites are located on the lake and only accessible by hiking or boating. The Fort Braden Trailhead offers a restroom, pavilion and three winding hiking and equestrian trail loops. This forest is also part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. You might be lucky and spot a bald eagle, currently listed as a threatened species, soaring above the treetops.
