Camping Topics Covered in This Article

The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico located approximately 120 miles off the southern most tip of the state of Florida. Key West is the southernmost point – and arguably the most popular. Key West is known for its sandy beaches, a lively nightlife, diving, snorkeling, historic people, creative artists and stunning sites. Key West is also famous for being home to the third largest coral reef in the world.

The closest Florida Key to the U.S. mainland is Key Largo. Although often thought to be the step-sister to its more popular sibling, Key West, Key Largo considers itself the Dive Capital of the World and is at the center of all things aquatic. Key Largo is home to a large, artificial reef and postcard-beautiful beachfronts. If you ask residents which is better; Key Largo or Key West, you’ll often receive this answer, “Key Largo has more dive shops. Key West has more dive bars!”

Whether you’re planning to visit for a day, a week or a month, some of the best Florida Keys and Key West RV parks, campgrounds and camping sites can be quickly and easily researched and booked…if you know how. This article will give you some information to guide you as to where you can stay and show you the secrets of selecting, reserving and enjoying RV and tent camping in the Florida Keys.

First, you need to know this to save yourself some time, effort and frustration. There is NO free camping in the Florida Keys. Unlike the Western states, BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land does not exist in Florida. But trust us, the Florida Keys are such a spectacular place to camp, you will be fine splurging on a camping site whether it be a large rig, a pull behind or a single tent!

Additionally, you should understand that the beaches typically close at sunset and don’t reopen until sunrise. You can, however walk most beaches after dark. Night swimming is dangerous and generally not advised, but should you not be able to control yourself, it is wise to stay close to the shoreline. And, while you may certainly fall sleep on the beach, many have restrictions about “overnighting” in a sleeping bag or tent. There are beaches that do allow tent camping but you’ll need to check with each specific location to see what the rules and regulations allow and don’t allow. Additionally, ask about safety concerns and weather-related information if you’re considering sleeping under the stars on a Florida Keys beach.

Getting to the Florida Keys

Getting to the Florida Keys on US-1

Many wonder how you actually get to the islands of the Florida Keys. YOU DRIVE! From the Florida mainland, US-1 will take you from Miami to Everglade National Park. Driving the 113 miles known as the Overseas Highway, U.S. Route 1 connects mainland Florida all the way to mile marker 0 in Key West. You will drive over the Atlantic Ocean, the Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico via a series of 43 bridges; an adventure in itself with spectacular water views. Since the Overseas Highway is the main road for many communities you will drive through, be patient – the hundred-some mile trip can take you over four hours from Miami to Key West.…more if there is an accident or you are traveling on the weekends when heavy traffic can be expected. The longest bridge is the Seven Mile Bridge (actually that’s an exaggeration – it’s really only 6.79 miles long!) followed by the Long Key Bridge, at a mere 2.3 miles in length, in comparison. Most of this route is two-lane and the speed limits rarely reach 55 miles per hour. Passing is limited. But, what’s the hurry? Slow down! There’s plenty to look at and distracted driving can be very little dangerous when you’re surrounded by water. We know it’s tough, but try and keep your eyes on the road ahead!

And, in case you’re wondering; there are no tolls on Highway 1.

You can get an app from the Monroe Country Sheriff’s Office that has live traffic info that gives real-time reports on crashes and other traffic disruptions. Additionally, the Monroe County Tourist Development Council offers an app with guided, narrated driving tours pointing out sites of interest such as galleries, watersport rentals and top fishing spots. This information is presented by location: the Lower Keys, Marathon, Islamorada and Key West, etc. You’ll also have access to maps and weather forecasts for the Keys, all on one convenient app that’s available on your mobile phone in the your Apple Store or if you have an Android phone, you can get the app through GooglePlay.
